Rome

Arrive in Rome, Trastevere night

Land, drop bags, and eat where the locals eat. The monuments start at dawn tomorrow.

6:00p

Arrive, dinner in Trastevere

Open in Maps ↗

Land at Fiumicino, take the Leonardo Express to Termini (32 min) or the regional train. Drop bags and head straight to Trastevere, framed by travelers as Rome's West Village: lantern-lit cobblestones, mostly locals even on weeknights, Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere as the anchor square. Dinner here, not near the sights.

Rome

Colosseum underground and Testaccio

The ancient city at its most hardcore: underground tunnels in the morning, the local market at lunch.

The upgrade travelers rave about most: the hypogeum gladiator tunnels and arena substructures, walking the gladiators' path. Third-party tours at $151-561 are widely called scalpers for the same EUR 24 access; book the official portal. Go 8:30-9:45 AM or after 4:30 PM; peak 10:30 AM-3:30 PM is brutal and shadeless.
