Day 1

Arrival & Jalan Alor Nights

Land, ride the express train into the city, and walk straight into KL's loudest dinner bell. Night one is Jalan Alor: woks, charcoal, and teh tarik at midnight.

2:00p

Touch down at KLIA

Open in Maps ↗

Clear immigration, follow the signs down to the KLIA Ekspres, and be at KL Sentral in 28 to 33 minutes for RM55. Trains run every 15 to 20 minutes from about 5am to midnight. A taxi costs RM90 or more with tolls and sits in the same traffic you are trying to escape.

Best timingTrains ~5am-midnight
Expected costRM55 one way
Getting thereLevel 1, KLIA Terminal 1 & 2
Local tipBuy the ticket at the kiosks with a card to skip the counter line. Sit on the left heading into the city for the skyline reveal.
5:00p

Bukit Bintang, the shopping spine

Open in Maps ↗

KL's neon retail canyon: Pavilion, Lot 10, and the covered walk between them. Come for the people-watching and the air-conditioning, not for dinner. Dinner is one street over.

Best timingMalls ~10am-10pm
Expected costFree to wander
Getting thereMRT Bukit Bintang
Local tipDo your wandering now and your eating on Jalan Alor later. The malls are air-conditioned relief, not a meal.
7:00p

Jalan Alor, the wok-fire street

Open in Maps ↗

One street, a hundred stalls, and the best first-night dinner in Malaysia. Grilled seafood, satay smoke, chicken wings, and noisy plastic tables under the string lights.

Best timingStalls ~5pm-2am
Expected costRM15-40 per person
Getting there5-minute walk from Bukit Bintang
What to orderGrilled stingray with sambal, chicken wings, and a plate of fried kuey teow. Save room for dessert at the far end of the street.
Local tipWalk the full street before you sit down. Eat where the tables are full of Malaysian families, not where a tout grabs your sleeve.
10:00p

Mamak supper: roti & teh tarik

Open in Maps ↗

KL runs on mamak stalls: 24-hour Indian-Muslim coffee shops where roti canai is flung to order and the teh tarik arrives in a long golden pour. This is the city's true late-night institution.

Best timingMany open 24 hours
Expected costRM5-10
Getting thereAll over Bukit Bintang
What to orderRoti canai with dhal, and a teh tarik kurang manis (less sweet).
Local tipKurang manis is the local move. Full-sugar teh tarik is dessert disguised as tea.
Don’t missYour first teh tarik, poured tableside in a long golden arc, on a plastic stool at midnight.
Do this insteadThe KLIA Ekspres. RM55, under 35 minutes, and you are eating on Jalan Alor while the taxi queue is still moving.

Day 2

Old KL: Squares, Mosques & Markets

Slow down and walk the old core. Two kilometers hold a century of KL: a cricket field turned independence square, a mosque at the rivers' meeting, and Chinatown at full volume.

8:30a

Merdeka Square & Sultan Abdul Samad

Open in Maps ↗

Where Malaysia's flag was first raised in 1957. The Moorish Revival building with its clock tower and copper domes is KL's most photographed facade, and it is at its best in morning light.

Best timingSquare always open
Expected costFree
Getting thereLRT Masjid Jamek
Local tipGo before 10am. The light is kind, the crowds are thin, and the building photographs best from the field's edge.
10:00a

Masjid Jamek, the river mosque

Open in Maps ↗

Onion domes and striped minarets at the meeting of the Klang and Gombak rivers, the spot KL was founded on. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times, and robes are provided at the gate.

Best timingOutside prayer times
Expected costFree
Getting there2-minute walk from the square
Local tipCover shoulders and knees. The courtyard is the calmest ten minutes of your day.
11:30a

Central Market & Kasturi Walk

Open in Maps ↗

The 1888 wet market turned craft hall: batik, pewter, wood carvings, and a covered lane of snacks outside. Tourist-priced but genuinely pleasant, and the upstairs food court is a solid backup lunch.

Best timingAbout 10am-10pm
Expected costFree entry
Getting thereAcross the river from Masjid Jamek
Local tipBargain gently, about 10 to 20 percent off the first price. Smile first, price second.
2:00p

Petaling Street & Sri Mahamariamman

Open in Maps ↗

Chinatown's covered market street at full volume: knockoff watches, herbal tea, roast duck hanging in windows. Step off it into Sri Mahamariamman, KL's oldest Hindu temple, under its towering gopuram.

Best timingMarket ~10am-10pm
Expected costFree entry
Getting there5-minute walk from Central Market
What to orderWantan mee or curry mee from a kopitiam stool, then cendol for dessert.
Local tipThe temple is free and active. Remove shoes, keep quiet, and skip the shops selling blessed trinkets at the door.
Don’t missThe Sultan Abdul Samad Building glowing copper at 8:30 in the morning, before the city wakes up.
Do this insteadThe MRT and your feet. The whole old core is a two-kilometer loop you can walk in an afternoon.
