Day 1
Srinagar

Arrive in Srinagar, float on Dal Lake

Touch down in Kashmir and slow down immediately. Today is the lake, the boat, and the sunset; the mountains start tomorrow.

2:00p

Land in Srinagar, transfer to your houseboat

Open in Maps ↗

Srinagar airport sits on an Air Force base, so expect heavy security and no filming inside. Pre-book your taxi; the prepaid counter costs more. The drive to Dal Lake takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Your houseboat sends a shikara to collect you from a numbered ghat gate, so carry only essentials for the transfer.

Best timingAirport: arrive 2+ hrs before departure
Expected costTaxi INR 800-1,200 ($9-14)
Getting therePre-booked taxi, Srinagar Airport to Dal Lake ghat gates
Local tipAsk the houseboat owner to bundle a complimentary shikara ride with your stay; several travelers report getting one included.
4:00p

Check into a Dal Lake houseboat

Open in Maps ↗

The signature Kashmir stay: carved wooden ceilings, chandeliers, and a deck facing the water. Board from your numbered ghat gate (travelers mention Gate 7 and Gate 9). Winter stays draw real complaints about cold rooms, weak hot water, and power cuts, so houseboats shine brightest March through November. Nigeen Lake boats are the quieter alternative travelers name.

Best timingCheck-in usually afternoon
Expected costVaries widely by season
Getting thereShikara transfer from your ghat gate
Local tipWinter travelers report smelly stagnant water around moored boats and heater-killing power cuts; pick these months with eyes open.
5:30p

Sunset shikara ride on Dal Lake

Open in Maps ↗

The single most posted activity in Kashmir. Sunset is the classic; the floating market at 5-6 AM is the insider morning move. Vendor boats sell kahwa, snacks, and the famous Dal Lake Maggi. Always fix the fare and duration before boarding, this advice appears in nearly every traveler post. Touts at the gates push overpriced rides.

Best timingSunset rides ~5-7p; floating market ~5-6a
Expected costINR 500-800 ($6-9) per shikara, bargain
Getting thereFrom your houseboat ghat
Local tipMorning riders catch the floating vegetable market when vendors converge around 5-6 AM; ask your boatman the night before.
Don’t missThe sunset shikara ride. Fix the fare before you board.

Day 2
Srinagar

Mughal Gardens and the old city

Gardens in the morning, the old city at midday, the lake again at night. Srinagar rewards a slow second day.

9:00a

Mughal Gardens: Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi

Open in Maps ↗

Travelers chain all three in 3-4 hours along the east side of Dal Lake. Nishat Bagh has 12 terraces with lake views, Shalimar Bagh was Jahangir's garden for Nur Jahan, and Chashme Shahi (1632, the royal spring) is the quiet favorite. September-October under the chinar trees is the most photographed season; May-June brings the flowers.

Best timingDaylight hours
Expected costEntry ~INR 25 ($0.30) per garden
Getting thereTaxi or auto along the Dal Lake east road
Local tipPari Mahal sits above Chashme Shahi and works as a bonus viewpoint if you have an extra hour.
12:30p

Old city: Jamia Masjid and the bazaars

Open in Maps ↗

The old city's anchor, built around 1400 AD with 370+ wooden pillars. Travelers describe a calm courtyard against busy bazaars outside. Go in the morning before markets open for photos. Dress modestly, cover your head, remove shoes, and avoid prayer times, especially Friday noon. The surrounding markets are noted for pashmina, carpets, papier-mache, saffron, and dry fruits.

Best timingAvoid prayer times
Expected costNo entry fee
Getting thereAuto-rickshaw from Lal Chowk, 15-20 min
Local tipHazratbal Shrine on Dal Lake appears in several itineraries as the peaceful lakeside counterpart if you want a second stop.
6:00p

Evening on the lakefront

Open in Maps ↗

Evening back on the water. Night shikara rides after dark are a documented thing and look spectacular with the houseboats lit up. Alternatively, walk the Boulevard Road along the lake for street food and the evening promenade scene.

Best timingEvening

Getting thereFrom your ghat gate
Local tipCarry cash; lakeside vendors rarely take cards.
