Day 1
MANILA

Land, Walls, Noodles.

Land, dodge the taxi gauntlet, and go straight to the old walled city. Manila in one evening gives you 400 years of history and the oldest Chinatown on earth.

2:00p

Touch down at NAIA, dodge the taxi gauntlet

Do your eTravel QR first: it is free, at etravel.gov.ph, within 72 hours before you fly. Screenshot the QR, airlines check it before boarding, and scam copycat sites charge $50 to $100 for the free form. Grab a Smart or Globe SIM at arrivals; a basic prepaid SIM runs about PHP 50 plus a data package, and you will need your passport to register it. Then book a Grab: NAIA to Intramuros is 25 to 45 minutes in light traffic and can pass 90 when it rains at rush hour.

Best timingSIM kiosks at every terminal
Expected costSIM from ~PHP 50; Grab PHP 350-500, peaks to PHP 800-1,200
Getting thereGrab pickup bays at arrivals, or the official airport taxi queue
Local tipThe arrivals touts quote a 'fixed official price' around double the real fare. For metered taxis, keep the dispatch slip and confirm the meter is running before you sit down.
4:30p

Intramuros, the walled city at golden hour

Open in Maps ↗

The Spanish walled city, and the only part of Manila that feels like a film set. Walk the ramparts from Fort Santiago as the light goes gold, then drop into the Casa Manila courtyard for the colonial-house museum.

Best timingFort Santiago: Mon-Fri 8am-10pm, Sat-Sun 6am-10pm (last entry 8pm weekdays, 8:30pm weekends). Casa Manila: Tue-Sun 9am-6pm, closed Mondays
Expected costFort Santiago PHP 75 regular, PHP 50 student/senior/PWD
Getting thereGrab to the Fort Santiago gate
Local tipThe wall walk is the move, not just the fort. Enter at Fort Santiago and follow the ramparts toward Baluarte de San Diego.
7:00p

Binondo food crawl

Founded in 1594, the oldest Chinatown in the world and Manila's greatest dinner neighborhood. Start at Wai Ying for hand-pulled lamian, cross to Dong Bei for dumplings, and finish with warm hopia from Eng Bee Tin.

Don’t missThe first pull of lamian at Wai Ying, eaten standing at the counter while Binondo rushes past outside.
Do this insteadIntramuros plus Binondo. Same half day, ten times the story, and dinner is sorted.

Day 2
MANILA

Old Manila, Slow.

The art-deco street, the river ferry, and the lumpia run. Old Manila rewards the morning person.

8:30a

Escolta, the art-deco revival

Open in Maps ↗

Manila's old main street is having a quiet revival: galleries, indie cinemas, heritage coffee shops in pre-war buildings. Walk it in the morning light before the heat arrives.

Best timingShops roughly 10am-6pm
Expected costFree to wander
Getting thereLRT-1 to Carriedo station
Local tipStart at the Burke Building end and walk toward Plaza Lacson. The revival is street by street, so wander the side lanes too.
11:00a

Lumpia at New Po Heng

Open in Maps ↗

The Binondo institution for Chinese-style fresh lumpia: a soft crepe wrapped around crunchy vegetables and pork, drowned in sweet sauce and crushed peanuts. This is the lunch the neighborhood runs on.

Best timingAbout 8:30 or 9am-7pm Mon-Sat; closes around 6pm Sunday
Expected costAbout PHP 100-150 per person
Getting there621 Carvajal St, a short walk from Escolta
What to orderFresh lumpia, two pieces, plus the kikiam if the tray is going around.
Local tipIf the line is long, Sincerity Restaurant (519 Quintin Paredes, famous for its fried chicken) is the backup plan a few streets over.
1:30p

The Pasig River ferry

Open in Maps ↗

The city's free river ferry runs from Escolta toward Guadalupe and back, about 50 to 60 minutes each way through the middle of Manila. It is the cheapest sightseeing in the city, when it is running.

Best timingFree; usually Monday-Saturday, roughly hourly; no routine Sunday service
Expected costFree
Getting thereEscolta station, a short walk from Binondo
Local tipSchedules shift with weather, holidays, and maintenance, so verify the latest MMDA schedule before you build your day around it. Bring a valid ID; service can be suspended in bad weather.
4:00p

The National Museum, or pack for Palawan

Open in Maps ↗

If the ferry is not running, the National Museum complex (free entry) is a 15-minute walk away and genuinely excellent. Otherwise, this is your slow afternoon: laundry, cash, and an early night before the Palawan flights.

Expected costMuseum entry free
Getting there15-minute walk from the ferry stations
Local tipWithdraw cash in Manila. ATMs get scarce on the islands, and boats take no cards.
Don’t missFresh lumpia at New Po Heng, still warm from the steamer, eaten at a formica table older than you.
Do this insteadEscolta plus the river ferry. Old Manila is the souvenir.
