Arrive on the coast: Udupi and Malpe
Fly into the coast, meet the temple town, and end on the sand. The Western Ghats start tomorrow.
Land in Mangalore, transfer to Udupi
Open in Maps ↗Fly into Mangalore (IXE), then head 55-60 km south to Udupi, about an hour by road. KSRTC buses run every 2 hours (INR 420-600/$5-7); a taxi runs INR 1,300-1,700 ($15-20). Most travelers use Mangalore as the gateway, but Pabbas ice cream in Lalbagh is the must-do stop travelers name before leaving town.
Udupi Sri Krishna Temple
Open in Maps ↗The anchor of every Udupi trip, a 13th-century matha. The deity is viewed through the Kanakana Kindi, the small nine-holed window tied to the Kanakadasa legend; travelers flag this as the thing to look for. Dress code is enforced, not advisory: men in dhoti without shirt, women in saree or salwar kameez, no photography inside. Go 6-9 AM for a calm darshan; avoid Janmashtami and Paryaya festival crowds unless that is the point.
Malpe Beach at sunset
Open in Maps ↗Six km from Udupi town, the default beach base. Travelers describe it as clean (a sand-cleaning machine runs every morning), family friendly, and the departure point for St. Mary's Island. Go for sunset, stay for the food shacks. Best months October-February; monsoon seas are rough and swimming advisories apply.
