Day 1
Taipei

Touch down in Taipei, eat at Raohe

Land, get your EasyCard, and head straight to the night market travelers rank first in Taipei. Night one is about arriving hungry.

3:00p

Land at Taoyuan and do the arrival drill

Open in Maps ↗

Submit the Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) online within 3 days before you fly. At the airport, withdraw cash at a Bank of Taiwan ATM (fee-free) and buy an EasyCard for about NT$100 ($3) at 7-Eleven; it covers the MRT, buses, the gondola, and YouBike. Take the airport MRT to Taipei Main Station. One scam note from a traveler: ignore unlicensed drivers soliciting rides at arrivals; use the MRT, official taxis, or a pre-booked transfer.

Best timingTWAC: complete within 3 days before landing
Expected costEasyCard NT$100 ($3)

6:00p

Raohe Street Night Market, pepper buns first

Open in Maps ↗

The night market travelers name first, and the one locals point visitors to over Shilin. Walk the 600-meter street and start at the Fuzhou Shizu pepper bun stall by the entrance: pork and scallion buns baked in charcoal clay ovens, NT$70 ($2) each, eaten hot. Then graze: Chairman Chen herbal mutton soup (Bib Gourmand), Yu Pin Yuan peanut and sesame tang yuan on shaved ice (NT$100, $3), grilled king oyster mushrooms, cheung fun rice rolls. Bring cash; most stalls do not take cards.

Best timingNightly, busiest 8-9 PM; go 5-7 PM to beat the worst crowds
Expected costNT$300-400 ($9-13) to graze well
Getting thereMRT Green line to Songshan Station, Exit 5
Local tipShare everything. Two people sampling beats one person committing to a full portion.
8:30p

Songshan Ciyou Temple and Rainbow Bridge

Open in Maps ↗

The ornate temple glowing gold, red, and blue at Raohe's entrance is worth the stop on its own. After the market, walk to Rainbow Bridge over the Keelung River for a short night stroll along the water. It is the calm comedown after the market crush.

Best timingTemple open evenings; bridge walkable 24h
Expected costFree
Getting thereWalk from Raohe's far end toward the Keelung River
Local tipPhotograph the temple from across the street to get the full facade.

Day 2
Taipei

Old Taipei: temples, beef noodles, Dihua Street

The historic west side: a living temple in the morning, the city's most argued-over beef noodle for lunch, the oldest street in the afternoon, and the food-lover's night market at night.

9:00a

Longshan Temple in the morning

Open in Maps ↗

Taipei's most atmospheric temple, and travelers say to go in the morning when locals gather to offer flowers and fruit. Ornate red-and-gold halls, dragon pillars, incense, and a koi pond garden, all free. Founded in 1738, it survived WWII bombing. It is an active place of worship, not a photo set; be respectful.

Best timingDaily; mornings are liveliest
Expected costFree
Getting thereMRT Blue line to Longshan Temple Station, Exit 1
Local tipPair it with Ximending and Dihua Street in one old-Taipei half day.
12:00p

Lao Shan Dong beef noodle soup

Open in Maps ↗

The most named beef noodle shop in Taipei: Michelin Bib Gourmand 2016 through 2024, open since 1949, handmade knife-cut noodles in herbal broth with melting-tender beef. It hides in the B1 food court of the Wan Nian Building in Ximending and is cash only. One dissenting traveler called the broth bland, so tastes vary; the locals' counter-pick is Yongkang Beef Noodle on Jinshan South Road.

Best timingLunch hours; expect a line
Expected costBowls run NT$130-360 ($4-11) across the top shops
Getting thereMRT Blue/Green line to Ximen Station, Wan Nian Building B1
Local tipThe 'small' portion is reportedly big. Order small and save room.
2:30p

Dihua Street and Dadaocheng

Open in Maps ↗

Taipei's oldest street, parts dating to the 1600s: herb and dried-goods shops, fabric stores, tea houses, and brick shop-houses. Wander down to the Dadaocheng Wharf for the riverside sunset. Many shops close early evening and English is limited, so go in the afternoon.

Best timingShops roughly 10 AM-6 PM
Expected costFree to wander
Getting thereMRT to Daqiaotou Station, 10-min walk
Local tipYongle fabric market nearby is a good browse even if you buy nothing.
6:30p

Ningxia Night Market, the food-lover's pick

Open in Maps ↗

Small (300 meters, about 150 stalls) but travelers call it the highest concentration of Michelin Bib Gourmand stalls in Taipei. The two names that come up most: Liu Yu Zi for fried taro balls with salted egg and pork floss, and Yuen Huan Pien (46 Ningxia Road, since 1965) for giant oyster omelets off a huge griddle (NT$90, $3). The oyster omelet's look draws mixed reactions, so know your own squeamishness level.

Best timingNightly from about 5 PM
Expected costNT$300-400 ($9-13) to graze
Getting thereMRT to Shuanglian Station, 10-min walk
Local tipStall hours vary; one vlogger found the two famous stalls closed on their night, so have backups.
Don’t missMorning prayer at Longshan Temple, then beef noodles for lunch.
